A criminal investigation is under way following the discovery of the bodies of two young boys and a girl in an Edinburgh flat.

Initially it was thought the children had died in a gas explosion – fire crews had extinguished a small fire at the flat in Slateford Road just after 1500 BST. But no fault has been found with the gas supply, and Lothian and Borders police confirmed that the deaths are being treated as “suspicious”.

A woman who is thought to be the children’s mother was taken to the city’s Royal Infirmary after apparently falling from the building.

Lorna Gordon reports.
