A retired priest has been charged with 18 offences allegedly committed at Fort Augustus Abbey school in the Highlands and another school in East Lothian between the 1950s and 1980s, the Press and Journal reports. Robert MacKenzie, 87, made no plea when he appeared in private at Inverness Sheriff Court.
The Daily Record front page features the story of a drunk bus driver who “took passengers on a nightmare journey through Glasgow”. The paper reports that a court heard he was so intoxicated he forgot what route he was on.
Safety fears have been raised over staffless libraries, the Edinburgh Evening News reports. The paper says librarians are “facing the axe” over council plans to save £1m.
The Scotsman reports that trains could run 24 hours a day for a UN climate summit which is taking place in Glasgow in November. The proposals are part of a plan to move 90,000 delegates and protesters off the roads.
Phone, broadband and pay-TV providers must alert customers when their current contract is coming to an end from today, under new rules expected to save some households more than £150 a year, The Herald reports.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Boris Johnson is considering ripping up former Chancellor Sajid Javid’s fiscal rules to allow for more spending and tax cuts to boost the economy after Brexit. The paper says it comes amid speculation that Rishi Sunak, who replaced Mr Javid after he resigned, will back the prime minister on planned VAT reform and investment in free ports.
The Daily Mail leads with the story that Prince Andrew once stayed with a tycoon who is accused of raping 10 women, some as young as 14. The paper says the prince visited Peter Nygard at his lavish estate in 2000. He is the second of the prince’s associates to be accused of sex crimes
