Work begins on football pitches at Withdean Sports Complex

The 3G pitches are being built at Withdean Sports Complex in the north of Brighton and Hove.

Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) said the sports pitches will help meet “strong demand” across the city for all-weather football pitches.

They are being constructed near an athletics track on a former car park and will be equipped with floodlights.

A 3G pitch is made up of synthetic turf and sand and rubber infills and these will be small-sided, meaning they can be used for teams with fewer than 11 players.

Funding has came from section 106 developer contributions, meaning grants can be sought from developers towards the costs of providing community and social infrastructure.

The council added that it would build on the legacy of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 tournament, when matches were played at the Amex Stadium.

Alan Robins, chair of the Culture, Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Economic Committee at BHCC said: “It’s great to see Withdean developing as a major sporting hub and enhancing our growing reputation as a major sporting city.”
