SNP vote to scrap pound under independence

The Herald on Sunday leads with a vote by the SNP to scrap the pound if Scotland becomes an independent country. The paper refers to the issue as the “key flashpoint” in any second independence referendum as the party supported the preparation for a Scottish currency.

The Scottish Sunday Express reports a party “rebellion” over Scotland’s economy as Nicola Sturgeon “loses vote on pound”. The vote took place at the SNP conference with the leadership losing by a slim margin.

Meanwhile The Sunday Times reports that a majority of people in Scotland would support independence if there was a no-deal Brexit, according to a poll. The paper goes on to say the first minister is expected to tell her party faithful that support for independence is rising and the Westminster system is “broken”.

Similarly The National reports on Nicola Sturgeon’s party conference speech which is to include the line “It is time – time for Scotland to become independent”. Ms Sturgeon is also expected to speak on the UK Government’s threat to block a second referendum, according to the paper.

The Scottish Sun leads with an image of Celtic captain Scott Brown and manager Neil Lennon paying their respects to Lisbon Lions legend Billy McNeill outside Parkhead. Fans also crowded round the statue of the former skipper before Saturday’s clash with Kilmarnock.

The Scottish Mail on Sunday

The Scottish Mail on Sunday leads on an investigation into farms that breed lions to be shot by trophy hunters or used in “Far East” medicine. The investigation – led by former Tory peer Lord Ashcroft – says some of the lions were shot in fenced enclosures while others were taken to “squalid slaughterhouses” before being “shot in the head and butchered”.
