The proposed new ground would have a capacity of 16,000

Oxford United has submitted a planning application for its proposed new stadium.

The application for the 16,000-capacity venue at The Triangle, near Kidlington, will be considered by Cherwell District Council.

It includes a 180-bed hotel, conference and event space, and a health and wellbeing centre.

Plans to incorporate the club’s history also feature – including a modern interpretation of the arch from the club’s old stadium, the Manor Ground, at the new ground’s entrance.

The five-hectare (12-acre) site is located south of Kidlington roundabout, west of Banbury Road, east of Frieze Way and opposite Oxford Parkway Station.

Oxfordshire County Council owns the land earmarked for the new stadium

Jon Clarke, development director at Oxford United, called the application a “significant milestone” for the “future sustainability of the club”.

He added: “We have taken the opportunity to create something truly incredible that not only places the visitor experience at its heart but is sustainable and will deliver huge benefits to our community and economy.”

The club says the “state-of-the-art” stadium will not use any high carbon intensity fossil fuels, such as gas – with Mr Clarke calling it “one of the greenest football stadiums to be built”.

The club also says it will be undertaking a planning application to build a bridge – thought to be from the stadium towards Oxford Parkway railway station – to further enhance connectivity.

Last year Oxfordshire County Council agreed a deal in principle to lease the land to the club.
